Vegan Teenage Zombie Huntress

By: G.G. Silverman

I never intended to become a zombie huntress; I had only intended to protest prom, high school’s last bastion of patriarchal society. I felt bad for the girls in my school, who flocked to prom like it was the second coming of Christ, complete with double-rainbows and unicorns. I would save them from all things prom: the spaghetti straps, push-up bras, and fuck-me pumps in candy colors. I’d save them from the horror of hair extensions, the tyranny of tooth whitening, and the stupidity of silk-tip manicures. I’d save them from the neon hideousness of fake-n-bake tans, and from the ultimate indignity, the Brazilian bikini wax. All this ending in the evening’s most absurd moment, the deflowering of virgins by dumb jocks in the back of Daddy’s old Beemer. Dear sweet Gloria Steinem, it’s enough to make me gag.

I’d been protesting prom for weeks, standing next to the prom ticket table with a table of my own. My best friend Cokie, who’s as quiet as she is loyal, sat dutifully beside me as I handed out my carefully-composed, Pulitzer-quality flyers, like “Prom and the Reinforcement of Stereotypical Gender Roles in Our Modern Society,” and not to be outdone, “Prom and Its Effects on the Developing Female Mind: The Dis-ease of Mass Consumerism.” I secretly slipped in some other flyers, like “Meat is Murder” and “Veganism and You: Fighting the Meat-Industrial Complex.” I even included, out of the kindness of my heart, a recipe for my favorite vegan, gluten-free brownies. The best way to reach people is to bombard them while you have their attention, and hope that something, or anything, sticks.

But I wasn’t sure if anyone was listening. I needed to be at prom, with my bullhorn and picket signs, telling my fellow womyn they had one last chance to redeem themselves and embrace feminism before it was too late. Even though there’s nowhere I’d rather be on a Friday night than staying in, reading Simone de Beauvoir by the fireplace, and painting my fingernails black, I knew that being on the scene at prom would be my last chance to save souls. Except prom night did not go as I had imagined.

ZOMBIE COMMAND HORROR ANTHOLOGY_result_1

Winter of Zombie 2015 SPOTLIGHT ON: Derek Ailes

What is your latest zombie release?

Zombie Command: A Horror Anthology

Quick description of it (no spoilers)

Zombies are on the loose! Space Station of the Dead, Brave Zombie World and Zombienado headline the latest collection of horror short stories by Derek Ailes (one half of the Ailes Brothers of Terror).

The crew of Space Station X23 must survive the fallout from a zombie plague that is unleashed by an alien stowaway. Will David Canese and the crew of the Kytrex stop the zombies in time? Zombie Twister: What happens when a group of storm chasers encounter an EF5 tornado infested with zombies while filming a documentary special? Will they survive the zombies or the tornado? Gargoyle’s Curse: A small town in Texas is being terrorized by a hungry gargoyle. Will Sheriff Tavenier be able to stop the gargoyle before it kills everybody in town? The Candy Factory: Willie Wonka meets Halloween 3. Henry Mars is possessed by an ancient demon trapped in a mask he bought on an auction site. The demon uses Henry Mars’ candy factory to produce mind controlling gummy bears to enslave the children of Northwest Indiana. Shark Transporter: A mad scientist using a transporter to send a great white shark on a killing spree from a plane, to a school’s swimming pool, to a zoo’s aquarium and more.

Something unique about it.

Zombie Command: When I originally wrote the story back in 2009, it was originally titled “Space Station of the Dead”.  I took the epilogue of my rejected science fiction novel Power Command from 1994 and rewrote it with zombies.  At the time, I couldn’t find any other stories dealing with a zombie outbreak on a space station.

Zombie Twister: I am a big fan of the show Storm Chasers and anything related to tornadoes.  Back in 1995, when I worked for a Star Trek vendor, we were in Iowa traveling from one Star Trek convention to the next when a tornado dropped down behind our convoy of Star Trek dealers and we all had to outrun it in our vans.  I wrote this story about tornadoes infested with zombies while they were filming an episode of a show similar to Storm Chasers.  This was written a year before they had a zombie infested tornado in “Z Nation”.

Brave Zombie World: I took a Utopian society similar to the one in the book “Brave New World” and threw a zombie outbreak into the mix.  How do you survive a zombie outbreak when you are not program to think outside the box?

Winter of Zombie 2015 SPOTLIGHT ON: Duncan P. Bradshaw

Class Four: Those Who Survive

Quick description of it (no spoilers)

The dead rule the world.

In the months after a deadly virus has swept across the planet, an eight year old boy and his appointed protector live from day to day. After a chance encounter they head for sanctuary. To get there, they will have to run the gauntlet of the inhabitants of this new world.

Ruled over by The Gaffer, a group of survivors holed up in a derelict factory struggle to maintain order and stability. Inside, those affected the most share their stories, hoping to come to terms with what has happened and what they’ve lost.

However, a clandestine operative in their midst lays the groundwork for an assault, the likes of which none of them have ever seen or could hope to prepare for.

These are the stories of those who survive.

Something unique about it.

It has some zombies in it which I’ve not seen in a film or read in a book. Two survivors stumble upon a Penny Gaff (freak show), where the owner picks up people to feed the zombified freaks. They include conjoined twins who scuttle around like a zombified spider, The Scorpion King who has pincers, Shark Boy, who well, has a shark head and Pearl ‘Praying’ Mantice, who has the arms of a mantis and just as deadly. Big fight scene between these and the unlucky people chosen to be their lunch.

Your short Bio.

Concocted from the leftovers of Sunday roast dinners and discarded one liners, Duncan P. Bradshaw continues to prophesize about the undead and their eventual ruling of the world. In each corner of every room in his house, he scrawls his visions, in the hope that someone will take heed of his warning. Before it’s too late, or his pen runs out of ink.

Quick description of it (no spoilers)

Six months after the start of the Mad Swine infection, Matt and his

Matt and Brian set out to reunite with the remaining residents of
Randall Oaks only to discover their former home has been taken over by

Your short Bio.

Something about the dark side of life has always appealed to me. Whether I experience it through reading and watching horror, or listening to my favorite heavy metal bands, I have been forever fascinated with the shadow of human emotion.

While in my 20’s, I discovered my passion to create through playing drums in two heavy metal bands: Kerygma and Twelve Winters. While playing in Twelve Winters (a power metal band with a thrash edge fronted by my now wife Kathryn), I was able to indulge myself in my love of writing by penning the lyrics for all our music. My love of telling a story started here as many of the songs became connected to the same concept and characters in one way or another.

Now in my 30’s, my creative passion is being passed to willing readers through the art of stories. While I have a particular fascination for real life scenarios, I also love dark fantasy. So, you’ll find a little bit of everything in my stories from zombies to serial killers, angels and demons to mindless psychopaths, and even ghosts and parallel dimensions.

I live in Nashville, Tennessee with my wife Kathryn, daughter Haley, and our German Shepherd Guinness. When I’m not writing, I enjoy playing hockey, watching hockey and football, cycling, watching some of my favorite television shows and movies, and of course, reading.

What is your latest zombie release?

Six Feet From Hell: Unity

Quick description of it (no spoilers)

Fifth book in the Six Feet From Hell series.

In the zombie apocalypse, a stable life is often fleeting, but for the citizens of Tazewell, Virginia, they have done just that, and Joe and his crew of rescuers have decided to make it their home. While not an unfamiliar place, it has changed over the years. The walled-in town keeps the living in, and the undead out. Like most safe havens, it is not without its flaws, and the good-natured people within the walls often forget that, but unfortunately, they get reminded that the world outside the walls is harsh and unforgiving. When a good-natured gesture turns tragic, they must put aside petty differences and band together to save their town. Most people think that only the good guys can rally the troops and storm the trenches…

Something unique about it

The setting is my hometown and most of the characters are populated by friends and co-workers of mine, as is the entire series.

Your short Bio

I’m just an average Joe that has had a penchant for zombies as far back as I can remember. I am a 35-year-old EMT-Enhanced living in Tazewell, Virginia and a father of four. I started the Six Feet From Hell series on a whim and it far surpassed any expectations I might have had. The series is now with a publisher, available in ebook and paperback, and sold all over the world. I have been working on the final book in the series, Six Feet From Hell: Endgame, and it should be done around the first of the year. Aside from the 6FFH series, I also have done a couple other novels including R.I.P. Van Winkle, Lost Between, and a short story collection.
