Guest Post: Greg P Ferrell #WinterofZombie

In honor of being a part of this year’s Winter of Zombie blog tour here is a set of short stories written exclusively for the visitors to the tour. These were started back during the Summer of Zombie tour. They’re from the perspective of one Tony the Zombie and his personal gripes against us humans. Typed out by Greg P. Ferrell because really, have you ever seen a zombie use a keyboard? It’s not pretty.

A day in my dead life!

Chapter 3

By: Tony the zombie

Translated by: Greg P. Ferrell

Hello living morsels, it is I, Tony the zombie, and I am back to talk to you about the things that really eat me up when I’m trying to eat you up. I spent most of the last few months, since I last talked to you, trapped inside one of those big boxes you like to hide in from us. After many failed attempts of running into the walls, I finally found a clear hole with an invisible shield over it and broke through it. Please excuse my ripped and torn clothing. It got messed up as I went through the hole, falling back out into the outside world. So here we go.

Number 5 on my things that annoy me list is you health nuts. Even if I could remember what I looked like or did back when I was alive, I’m pretty sure I didn’t sport a great physical appearance. Judging by my current situation, I was obviously not the best long distance runner or one of my new family wouldn’t have caught me and converted me to this new awesome life. So my gripe with you overly healthy people is this. WHY?

For multiple reasons, I don’t understand the desire to keep yourself so trim and fit. Oh sure it gives you an advantage to staying alive a little while longer but really, let’s be honest, you’re going to lose in the end and you’ll just die tired and hungry. Plus your meat is so stringy and dry. I caught one of you the other day and after a few bites I was not digging the taste but I continued on anyway because well that’s what we do. Now one of those fatties is a whole other story when it comes to taste. The fat marbling really adds a new dimension to the pleasure of a freshly caught meal. Especially with the ones we like to call free range whom have been wandering around trying to avoid us for a while. The fat on those is usually a little less thick in some areas but still provides a tasty meal when caught with a lot less chewing required. Man I’m getting hungry again just thinking about one of those.

Anyway back to you healthy ones. My advise to you is slow down, eat something and let nature take it’s course. Me or one of my kind will be along shortly to bring you into a new way of life, or death as you look at it.

Well that’s it for today while I go and inspect this big hole in the ground with those pointy sticks in the bottom. Next time I will talk about those surprise traps you people keep laying out for us. Till next time this is Tony the zombie and remember AAARRRGG! is not just our motto but our way of life too!

What’s with the Zombie craze? I think I have some answers.

Look around. It seems that wherever you turn, zombies are popping up in entertainment and pop culture like the unkillable bastards that they are. As someone who’s always loved zombies, I couldn’t be happier about this. I’m guessing you are too, since you follow Armand and his blog. But think back about ten or fifteen years ago: zombie lovers were treated like the bastard stepchildren of the entertainment world. The general public was being served up a steady diet of ghosts, vampires, and other paranormal creatures, but zombie lovers had little fresh meat to call their own, comparatively. Sure, there were a few little things we could feast on here and there, but like good zombies, we were unsatiable.

Fast forward to 2015. Zombies are all the rage these last few years, exploding to the forefront after quietly simmering in the background for over a decade. The Walking Dead show breaks cable viewership records with every new season, (suck it, vampires!) and new zombie entertainment is proliferating every day. And zombies seem to be dominating the Halloween horror landscape. Look at community event calendars most Octobers: zombie walks and zombie proms abound. And you can’t walk into a Halloween store with out getting slapped in the face with a disembodied zombie part.

So what’s with the insane zombie craze, you ask? How did we get here?
And is it bad to be obsessed with zombies?

I’ve been mulling it over for a long time, and I think I have an answer.

Of all the paranormal creatures in the entertainment landscape, zombies speak to our modern anxieties the most. We commute en masse to day jobs, most of which treat us like a commodity, something to be thrown away when we’re used up. Until then, we’re meat puppets: someone pulls the strings and we jump. Then we’re expected to go home at night and consume wildly because that’s what keeps the economy going. We consume goods that make us poor by saddling us with debt, we devour packaged foods that rot our bodies and brains, and we gulp-down fear-based media, whatever the powers that be feed us to keep us in line. We also have very real worries of global pandemic, and nuclear war. Zombie-themed media allows us to express all this angst in a way that’s safe. By playing zombie, we alert ourselves to the very real possibility that at any moment, someone can take our precious identities away from us. By method-acting the worst kind of mindlessness, we develop sympathy for ourselves as humans. The zombie experience helps us truly understand powerlessness, and it allows us to safely express our rage. Then we step out of our costumes, our TV shows, and our books, and we re-enter the world in a more conscious fashion. We say, okay, how do I fix this? What do I care about?

For me, interestingly, my foray into the zombie world encouraged me to learn more about meat-production, and I’ve since stopped eating so much meat from large animals, refusing to support the mega factory-farm system that is unhealthy for animals, humans, and the environment. I’ve also become more outspoken on issues of animal cruelty, by petitioning and making my voice heard on social media.

If your love of zombies has inspired you to do something for the world, I’d love to hear from you. Ping me on Twitter at @GG_Silverman and we’ll have a chat. Until then, keep enjoying your zombies. I know I will. J

ZOMBIE COMMAND HORROR ANTHOLOGY_result_1

Winter of Zombie 2015 SPOTLIGHT ON: Derek Ailes

What is your latest zombie release?

Zombie Command: A Horror Anthology

Quick description of it (no spoilers)

Zombies are on the loose! Space Station of the Dead, Brave Zombie World and Zombienado headline the latest collection of horror short stories by Derek Ailes (one half of the Ailes Brothers of Terror).

The crew of Space Station X23 must survive the fallout from a zombie plague that is unleashed by an alien stowaway. Will David Canese and the crew of the Kytrex stop the zombies in time? Zombie Twister: What happens when a group of storm chasers encounter an EF5 tornado infested with zombies while filming a documentary special? Will they survive the zombies or the tornado? Gargoyle’s Curse: A small town in Texas is being terrorized by a hungry gargoyle. Will Sheriff Tavenier be able to stop the gargoyle before it kills everybody in town? The Candy Factory: Willie Wonka meets Halloween 3. Henry Mars is possessed by an ancient demon trapped in a mask he bought on an auction site. The demon uses Henry Mars’ candy factory to produce mind controlling gummy bears to enslave the children of Northwest Indiana. Shark Transporter: A mad scientist using a transporter to send a great white shark on a killing spree from a plane, to a school’s swimming pool, to a zoo’s aquarium and more.

Something unique about it.

Zombie Command: When I originally wrote the story back in 2009, it was originally titled “Space Station of the Dead”.  I took the epilogue of my rejected science fiction novel Power Command from 1994 and rewrote it with zombies.  At the time, I couldn’t find any other stories dealing with a zombie outbreak on a space station.

Zombie Twister: I am a big fan of the show Storm Chasers and anything related to tornadoes.  Back in 1995, when I worked for a Star Trek vendor, we were in Iowa traveling from one Star Trek convention to the next when a tornado dropped down behind our convoy of Star Trek dealers and we all had to outrun it in our vans.  I wrote this story about tornadoes infested with zombies while they were filming an episode of a show similar to Storm Chasers.  This was written a year before they had a zombie infested tornado in “Z Nation”.

Brave Zombie World: I took a Utopian society similar to the one in the book “Brave New World” and threw a zombie outbreak into the mix.  How do you survive a zombie outbreak when you are not program to think outside the box?

Class Four: Those Who Survive

Quick description of it (no spoilers)

The dead rule the world.

In the months after a deadly virus has swept across the planet, an eight year old boy and his appointed protector live from day to day. After a chance encounter they head for sanctuary. To get there, they will have to run the gauntlet of the inhabitants of this new world.

Ruled over by The Gaffer, a group of survivors holed up in a derelict factory struggle to maintain order and stability. Inside, those affected the most share their stories, hoping to come to terms with what has happened and what they’ve lost.

However, a clandestine operative in their midst lays the groundwork for an assault, the likes of which none of them have ever seen or could hope to prepare for.

These are the stories of those who survive.

Something unique about it.

It has some zombies in it which I’ve not seen in a film or read in a book. Two survivors stumble upon a Penny Gaff (freak show), where the owner picks up people to feed the zombified freaks. They include conjoined twins who scuttle around like a zombified spider, The Scorpion King who has pincers, Shark Boy, who well, has a shark head and Pearl ‘Praying’ Mantice, who has the arms of a mantis and just as deadly. Big fight scene between these and the unlucky people chosen to be their lunch.

Your short Bio.

Concocted from the leftovers of Sunday roast dinners and discarded one liners, Duncan P. Bradshaw continues to prophesize about the undead and their eventual ruling of the world. In each corner of every room in his house, he scrawls his visions, in the hope that someone will take heed of his warning. Before it’s too late, or his pen runs out of ink.
