Zombie Crawl with Armand Rosamilia

Highway To Hell 2 or Why Did This Take 5 Years?

Armand Rosamilia

In September 2010 I released Highway To Hell, a brutally extreme zombie novella. Really brutal. My wife won’t read it and I can’t blame her at this point. I’ve recently rewritten it and toned down the really crazy stuff in it and it fits much better in my Dying Days world.

So I wrote a sequel. Five years later. In the meantime I released about a hundred different things and got well past writing such graphic stories.

The challenge of writing a sequel so many years later and once you’ve established your real writing voice is the idea to throw the original in the garbage and start over, which time did not permit. Am I proud of the original? Of course. Especially now that I’ve made some major corrections to it and kept the story but changed some of the poor grammar and feel to it. I know readers have responded, so I’m happy.

I literally had to re-read the first book and make notes because a lot of the story was a blur. This will happen to an author who averages about 400,000 words written per year. Parts of it I laughed at because they were good ideas I’d forgotten I’d added into the book and in a couple of cases ideas I had in the back of my head to use in a future story, not realizing I’d written it into this book.

I often wondered what the challenge would be for writing a sequel so far away from the last book as opposed to writing books in a sequence and releasing once or twice a year. I had no clue how daunting a challenge it would be, especially getting into the mindset of characters I hadn’t thought about it several years.

I ask a question…

As a writer, have you ever had to do this and how big of a challenge was it after so many months had passed?

As a reader, when you’ve come back to a series spaced years apart did you notice a big difference in the writing and did it lose anything or was it even better than you thought it would be?
