Z Children: Awakening
Quick description of it (no spoilers):
This book chronicles the beginning of a zombie outbreak as told through the eyes of six main characters in Texas. These first person POV origin stories are the vehicle to creating two distinct survival groups that will be carried forward throughout the next several books. We’ve also included secondary characters, presented in 3rd person omniscient to create distance between said characters and the readers, which will become increasingly important as the world of the Z Children builds. The outbreak premise of our storyline centers around the ever-changing climate of world health, particularly focusing on the vaccination schedule prescribed by the CDC and the quality-control associated with said commonly administered vaccines. Although there is gore, and plenty of it, we’ve prioritized character development and human interest.
Something unique about it:
We feel that there are a few things that make Z Children: Awakening stand out in the growing bookshelf of zombie books. Firstly, focusing on children as the primary villain during an apocalypse presents particular changes in how an uninfected may choose to respond. A grown person fighting a grown zombie might experience little hesitation in killing to survive, but a grown person versus a small, blonde child might think twice before pulling the trigger- a delay that could cost the person’s life. We also have brought the issues of family pets and loyal dogs front and center- creating an owner and dog pair that survives together, displaying how a well-trained dog of the right breed can provide not only companionship, but also defensive help. Lastly, among other things, having the expertise of a retired USAF SERE instructor at our beck and call to create probable scenarios and human (trained and untrained) responses means that the book brings realism to a higher level- everything from foraging, to weapon choice, to PTSD at the end of the world.
